Glory Revealed
Early Easter morning I slipped into the studio for a quiet morning of reflection; this would be the first onsite Easter celebration in the middle of a 12 month worldwide quarantine that just seemed as if it would never end. I wanted this morning to be extra special. I began reading through the account of the angel who came down from heaven to roll away the heavy stone from Jesus’ burial cave. I had entered a similar cave on my trip to Israel some years before; I had seen the heavy stone rolled back. I marveled at the strength of that angel. A short while later, as I wondered if and when I might receive another vision of angles, I began to see an arc-like shape overhead, with raised arms holding what seemed to be a shield. I began to record the lines into my sketchbook of the raised arms, the bent knees pressing forward. As I sat back, I realized the raised arms weren’t holding a shield at all..

THE STORY BEHIND THE ART
Outside the northern walls of Jerusalem I found myself pulling away from our tour group, in search of a shaded area where I could pause to take in the tide of emotion that was welling up. I had just left the empty tomb which overlooks Skull Hill, and my 10 days in Israel all came rushing together. Sitting on a rock wall in the garden, the grief-mixed-with-joy of Easter morning had taken on deeper meaning.
Fast forward to this Easter morning of 2021, heading into our second year of worldwide quarantine, as I sat reading Matthew 28 account of the first Easter morning, I marveled at the strength of the angel who opened the huge grave stone.
“Early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women. ‘Don’t be afraid!’”
I marveled over how the Lord sends His angels to assist us in times of need. This angel physically moved the stone for the women who had a need beyond their own strength. I marveled at the angels strength having seen first hand in Israel how large and heavy the carved stone doors actually are.
As my thoughts moved on, I paused to see if I might receive any visions before beginning my morning sketching. I did.
I saw an image of a shield-like arc overhead with two strong arms holding it up. As I sketched out the rest of the figure I saw with bent knees learning forward, I soon realized the arc was not a shield as I had first thought, but the rough stone covering the entry to Jesus' tomb; the arms belonged to the strong angel, rolling the heavy stone away. As the images pieced together I sat looking at my strong angel I had just read about.
Easter morning took on a whole new level of deepness that morning; the Lord’s directs His angels to assist us.
